Gerard is a Registered Psychologist & Mediator with a strong interest in Elder Mediation having completed the EMIN Certification process (2018 – first in NZ, ), the Resolution Institute 3 day Elder Mediation Training Workshop in 2016, the Understanding Dementia Online Course through University of Tasmania and other related training. Gerard is a current member of the Elder Mediation Australian Network (EMAN).

For over 25 years Gerard has been working in a variety of roles with individuals experiencing conflict. Gerard’s practice has included working with family dynamics, employment relationships, injury issues, building maintenance and property disputes, outstanding debt, intense emotions, anger management, communication frustrations.

Since 2006 Gerard has conducted more than 1500 mediations. For 5 years he mediated on an almost daily basis and now focuses on a specialist private practice.

Gerard is an experienced Psychologist, registered since 1995, with particular skills in working with anxiety, depression, and addictions (especially gambling, and alcohol and drug issues). Gerard also has experience as an employee assistance counsellor (addressing mainly workplace issues) and in providing professional supervision to staff at Accident Compensation Corporation and the Department of Corrections. Prior to registering as a Psychologist Gerard trained and worked in the area of intellectual disability.

Gerard is a fellow of the Resolution Institute (RI) and has Advanced Mediation Accreditation and is on the RI Register of Professional Supervisors, accredited as a NZ Family Dispute Resolution Provider, accredited to the Australian National Mediation Standard, has attained certification at the International Mediation Institute, and has completed the Divorce Mediation Training Programme at Erickson Mediation Institute, Minneapolis, USA. Gerard has also been a RI coach providing coaching / assessment to participants on the RI 5 day courses for 5 years.

Gerard’s approach to mediation is facilitative, placing great importance on participants/parties’ self-determination and capacity for a better future. Gerard’s strengths include the patience to listen, accept and not judge; friendly respectful manner; and handling disruptive behaviour in a positive way. Participants in Gerard’s mediations have described him as being detailed and thorough, considerate, calm and fair.
