Derek Johnston is a highly experienced commercial barrister based at Thorndon Chambers in Wellington, one of New Zealand’s leading sets of chambers. He specialises in corporate, commercial, securities and competition law.

Derek holds a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute, the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand, the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.  He has been appointed to the Arbitration Panel of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.

Derek has practised law for over 35 years. Before joining the bar in 2011, Derek spent more than 25 years as a corporate partner at Russell McVeagh in Auckland and Wellington.  He has a reputation for resolving complex legal issues. Derek has significant experience in acquisitions and cross-border investment, long term contracts and joint ventures. 

He has particular expertise and experience in relation to the following sectors:
  • capital markets
  • energy
  • oil and gas
  • telecommunications
  • information technology
  • financial services
 
Derek is currently an independent (non-director) member and Chair of the Regulatory Governance Committee of NZX Limited.  He was previously a member of the New Zealand Markets Disciplinary Tribunal for 10 years (from 2004 to 2014) and for the last 3 years of his term was Chair of that Tribunal.  While on that Tribunal he sat on various Divisions adjudicating on breaches of NZX’s Market Rules by listed companies and other market participants in the New Zealand listed securities markets.
